LITERATURE AND THE ARTS IN THE AGE OF SURREALISM

The historical framework of this course is the period between the two world wars, a time in which the spirit of surrealism dominates intellectual and artistic aspects of French culture. 

 

The Surrealist revolution will be studied in   its themes and its ideologies,   its concepts and its poetics, through a detailed analysis of texts by Breton, Aragon, Eluard, Desnos, Artaud along with a close study of paintings and films, including works by Chirico, Duchamp, Picabia, Miro,  Clair, Bunuel, etc.

 

The course will explore the relation of theory and practice in literature and the arts. Slide projections, showing of films in class and visits to museums will form an organic part of the course.
