Work: Several short papers Oral presentation and final paper (same topic) Midterm and Final exams Francophone Louisiana is
one of the most fascinating, celebrated, and misunderstood regions of the
U.S. This course will provide students
with the opportunity to explore the history of this ethnically diverse corner
of the American South from several angles:
historical, literary, sociological, and linguistic. Particular attention will be paid to the
development of Cajun and Creole communities and their assimilation (or lack
thereof) within the context of the larger American culture. Along with reading books and articles about
these communities, we will also examine their literary output (primarily from
the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries). |
