V45.0992-002CLAUDIE BERNARD SENIOR SEMINAR THE FRENCH NOVEL FROM 1900 TO 1940 Course in French Day and time : Tuesday, 2p.m.-4 :45p.m. Room :
Waverley 566B Description: In the first half of the 20th century, in a world shaken by technological advances, social changes and conflicts, the weakening of traditional values and, after WWI, the awareness that « civilizations are mortal, » the novel appears both as the dominant literary genre, and as a genre in quest of its own identity. While sounding the depths of the self, exploring the relationships between the individual and the institutions, revisiting in unexpected ways the surrounding world, or developing an anguished interrogation on the human condition, it never stops questioning its own processes and potential, and testing its own limits. Students are expected to participate in class discussions, to deliver several oral presentations, and to write a 15-page final paper. Texts: Colette, Les Vrilles de la vigne (in : Sido, Les Vrilles de la vigne, Livre de
