Prizes and InternshipsThe department awards seven prizes annually for excellence in French. In addition to the basic requirements for the major, students also have the opportunity to participate in internships sponsored by the Department of French. Recent internships have been completed at the Cultural Services of the French Embassy office, the French Music office, the French Film Office and the French Government Tourist Office. Other opportunities exist overseas including internships through The French-American Chamber of Commerce and the Claude Monet Foundation at Giverny. The UG administrative aide has a list of potential internships involving French. Internships may carry two, four, or six points (8-10 hours a week for four points). Students must obtain permission of the director of undergraduate studies and write both a mid-term and a final report on their internship.
2007-2008 HONORS & AWARDS The PRIX D’EXCELLENCE is awarded to the student with the highest level of achievement in French literature or culture. 2008 laureate: Justine LINDEMANN. The PRIX BERNARD GARNIEZ is awarded for excellence in the study of French literature or culture. 2008 laureate: Melanie JACOBSON. The PRIX FRANCE-AMÉRIQUE is awarded to the student who displays a particular commitment to furthering and elucidating Franco-American relations. 2008 laureate: Sheyna SILVERMAN. The JINDRICH ZEZULA PRIZE is awarded to the best honors thesis in French. 2008 laureate: Benjamin GOLDMAN. The PRIX GERMAINE BRÉE is awarded to the student who made a significant contribution to French cultural life at NYU. 2008 laureate: Ben KORONES. The PRIX PARIS is awarded to the student who, in addition to academic excellence, has made a significant contribution to the NYU-in-Paris program. 2008 laureate: Taylor HENNINGER. The PRIX MICHÈLE LAPAUTRE is awarded to the most promising sophomore or junior majoring in French. 2008 laureate: Lisa KITAGAWA. The PRIX SPÉCIAL DU DÉPARTEMENT is awarded occasionally to a student who made an exceptional contribution to the department’s intellectual and social life. 2008 laureate: Bryan PIROLLI.
